Everyone belongs!

Social S.T.A.R.S.—everyone belongs!

EVERYONE BELONGS!

Is not just our motto — it's what we truly believe and want to ensure!

Social and communication skills only improve with practice...

Simply "getting out there" often backfires because a social faux pas may occur and without support, understanding and modeling of appropriate skills, one may receive criticism and then be afraid to try again.  The fear of social failure or embarrassment often results in people becoming isolated and/or depressed.

... but all too often, practice opportunities aren't readily available.  Some organizations or practitioners offer "friendship groups" that meet 1-2 times per month for an hour or two each time -- that's not enough! Reading books, watching DVDs and even taking classes that provide tips on improving social and communication skills can help, but without regular, supportive opportunities to practice the skills, they are only theory.

So, what can Social STARS do:

  • to help people become more socially able?

  • to help people become more active and less isolated?

  • to help individuals have more confidence to engage socially, educationally and vocationally?

We provide a safe, supportive place for teens and adults to learn and practice effective social skills and communication skills.

After the client receives training, he/she is provided with opportunities to practice the skills in which they've just been trained.  The recreation opportunities are fun activities agreed upon by the clients as a group.  During the activities, clients are supported in their skills by the staff and will receive feedback, reminders and prompts as necessary, and modeling of context appropriate skills.

Provided in a 1:1 setting or in small groups, we provide training in social skills and effective communication.  We use proven curricula developed by several acclaimed researchers, doctors, educators, and other health practitioners and tailor the training to meet the needs of each client.
